Il Festival MY JAZZ ISLAND ideato da Filomena Campus in collaborazione con Nicola Spiga dell’Associazione Forma e Poesia nel Jazz e Ross Dines del Jazz Club Soho di Londra, uno dei jazz club piu’ importanti in Europa (www.pizzaexpresslive.co.uk) e l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Londra, rappresenta un ponte diretto tra Cagliari e Londra attraverso il jazz e la letteratura, promuovendo progetti e collaborazioni tra artisti italiani e inglesi.

 The Festival MY JAZZ ISLAND created by Filomena Campus in collaboration with Nicola Spiga (Forma e Poesia nel Jazz) in Cagliari, Sardinia, Ross Dines (Jazz Club Soho Pizza Express, London www.pizzaexpresslive.co.uk), and the Italian Cultural Institute in London.

It represents a bridge between the beautiful Sardinian capital, Cagliari and London, through jazz and literature, encouraging new projects and collaborations between Italian and British artists and promoting Sardinian beauty and art in UK.

Anni fa lasciai la mia isola per un’altra isola, che mi accolse e mi aiutò a realizzare tanti sogni. Ora è tempo di costruire un ponte tra le due isole e terre antiche, in particolare tra due città, una ricca di mare, sole e ritmo, l’altra crocevia di culture diverse: Cagliari e Londra.

Un ponte fatto di note, sabbia e mirto, teatro e maschere, con le parole magiche di un grande scrittore poeta. Incontri musicali e improvvisazione, ispirati dal solstizio d’estate e incoraggiati dall’accoglienza e dalla visione di Nicola Spiga di Forma e Poesia nel Jazz. Concerti non per caso nella via dei Naviganti, al Lazzaretto di Sant’Elia.

Il programma del festival porta la firma di Theatralia, il mio avatar teatrale.

I tre concerti sono una sfida ironica tra Londra e Cagliari, rappresentata nel primo da due grandissimi improvvisatori e star del jazz: Orphy Robinson al vibrafono e Antonello Salis al piano e fisarmonica. Ci guideranno su un immaginario ring, si sfideranno in diversi round di improvvisazione dove forse sarà necessaria la presenza di un arbitro.

Il secondo concerto è dedicato alla fusione di jazz e teatro, dall’improvvisazione in veste di “Jester of Jazz”, giullare del jazz, alle musiche di Steve Lodder e Dudley Phillips sposate ai testi ispirati a Dario Fo, Franca Rame, Stefano Benni e alla mai dimenticata Maria Carta.

Con Stefano Benni ci aspetta un gran finale, lo spettacolo che ha ispirato il tema dell’intera rassegna: Italy VS England con testi di Benni e musiche originali del mio quartetto inglese. Un’idea nata anni fa a Londra che ora è diventata una vera e propria produzione musicale/teatrale di cui curo la regia.

Il nostro viaggio di naviganti continuerà a Londra, a Novembre, e poi… “Portami a casa, dio specchiato in cielo e cielo specchiato in dio, guidami sospeso sulla tua grande mano d’acqua” (da “Sagrademari” di Stefano Benni)

 Years ago I left my island to another island, that welcomed me and helped me to make many dreams come true.  Now it ‘s time to build a bridge between the two ancient islands, especially between two cities,  onefull of sea, sun and rhythm, the other a crossroads of different cultures, Cagliari and London.
A bridge made of notes, of sand and myrtle, theater and masks, with the magic words of a great poet. Musical encounters and improvisation, inspired by the summer solstice and encouraged by the vision ofNicola Spiga of  the association Forma e Poesia nel Jazz. Concerts not by chance will be in ‘Via dei Naviganti’,  the Sailors’ road, at the Lazaretto S.Elia in Cagliari.

 The festival is a Theatralia international production.

The three concerts symbolise an ironic challenge between London and Cagliari, represented by two greatimprovisers and jazz stars: Orphy Robinson on vibes and Antonello Salis on piano and accordion. They will guide us on an imaginary ring, will compete in several rounds of improvisation where perhaps the presenceof a referee will be necessary.
The second concert is dedicated to the fusion of jazz and theater, from the scat  improvisation as a‘ Jesterof Jazz ‘ to music written by Steve Lodder and Dudley Phillips and my lyrics inspired by Dario Fo andFranca Rame, Stefano Benni and Maria Carta.
With Stefano Benni we expect a grand finale, the show that inspired the theme of the entire festival:  ‘ItalyVS England’ with texts by Benni and original music by my English quartet. A Theatralia production with Stefano Benni and myself on stage together with my quartet and featuring Orphy Robinson special guest in Cagliari and Cleveland Watkiss in London.

The sailors’ journey will continue in London in November and then …

Preview: My Jazz Islands Festival
(Cagliari, Sardinia, 20th-22nd June 2013 & Pizza Express, London, 11-13 Nov. 2013. Preview by Alison Bentley)

  Spring can really hang you up the most, as the song says- especially when it blows hot and cold. Summer’s already arrived in Sardinia, and they’re organising a Jazz Festival to celebrate the solstice and full moon (‘plenilunio’-even the word makes you feel relaxed). The venue is the Lazzaretto di Cagliari Centre, a beautiful, ancient hospital building, recently restored to house artistic events in its cloisters. It’s right on the sea, below the historic city of Cagliari.

The festival’s  ‘jazz islands’ are Sardinia and the UK. Singer, actor and theatre director Filomena Campus is from the former, but lives mostly in London.  She and Nicola Spiga of the Forma e Poesia nel Jazz Association have created the festival to bring British and Italian musicians together. The second part is in London in November.
